Apprentice nursing associates

Nursing Associates (ANA) are a highly trained, generic, nursing support role in England designed to bridge the gap between Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs) and Registered Nurses (RNs) to deliver hands-on, person centered care as part of the nursing team.

This is an exciting development opportunity for our healthcare support worker workforce to build on and develop their skills and knowledge through the Apprentice Nursing Associate (ANA) apprenticeship.

Apprentice Nursing Associates:

  • Work independently, and with others, under the leadership and direction of a registered nurse within defined parameters, to deliver care in line with an agreed plan.
  • Like Registered Nurses, join the Nursing Midwifery Council Register (NMC) and on successful completion of the apprenticeship, and registration with the NMC, apprentices are promoted to a band 4 nursing associate.
  • Whilst in training, rotate to work in a range of clinical specialties to gain as much experience as possible across different age groups to cover the lifespan of a patient.

The nursing associate apprenticeship pathway offers:

  • Permanent employment
  • University course fees paid by CUH
  • Paid leave for academic study and practice placement
  • Support throughout your employment and training
  • Promotion to a nursing associate (band 4) position following registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC)

The nursing associate apprenticeship contains an educational Level 5, foundation degree training programme which typically lasts two years.  Apprentice nursing associates commence full time as Healthcare Support Workers (37.5 hours per week) to gain experience, knowledge and achievement of the National Care Certificate within three months of starting, after this the apprenticeship starts.

There is also access to further development including advancement to a registered nurse position through Degree Top-Up of the nursing degree apprenticeship pathway; more information is available about this route on this website.

New cohorts commence every January.  Upon commencement of the university place you will continue to work clinically for 22.5 hours per week and 15 hours per week will be in study and practice placements. There will also be some block release placements to broaden experience and knowledge.  The programme duration is 2 years.
