Elective placement opportunities for Pre-Registration Student Nurses, Student Nursing Associates & Student Midwives

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUHFT) is pleased to invite second and final-year Student Nurses, Student Nursing Associates, and Student Midwives to express their interest in undertaking an observational elective placement with CUHFT.

Elective placements at CUHFT present an excellent opportunity for students to gain exposure to a variety of learning experiences within a world-renowned teaching hospital located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

We particularly encourage applications from students considering future employment with CUH upon qualification.

Placement Duration and Clinical Specialisms

Elective placements are offered for a maximum period of four weeks, equivalent to a maximum of 150 hours. The Trust offers an extensive range of clinical specialisms that provide care across all age groups; further details regarding our clinical areas can be found on our webpages.

How to Express Your Interest

Students interested in undertaking an elective placement at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust must complete the Microsoft Form available via this link (opens in a new tab). Submitting this form will formally register your interest and initiate the application process.

Types of Placements Offered

Please be advised that, due to the short duration of elective placements, CUHFT is only able to offer non-assessed observational elective placement opportunities. Participating in an observational placement enables students to gain valuable insights into a diverse range of specialisms at CUHFT, which they may not typically encounter. Elective observational placements are also designed to help students develop a broader understanding of healthcare practice and clarify future career interests.

Application Timeline

To allow adequate time for all necessary checks, please ensure your elective placement request is submitted at least 16 weeks (4 months) prior to your intended start date. This lead time accommodates the scheduling needs of our local students and apprentices, ensuring a high-quality placement experience. While we make every effort to accommodate as many requests as possible, please be aware that approval may not be possible during periods of high student placement activity.
