Cambridge University Hospitals is designated as the major trauma centre (MTC) for the East of England.
Up to 800 people every year receive major traumatic injuries in this region – in a car crash, for example. Major trauma is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 40 in the UK.
The major trauma centre forms the centre of the regional trauma network, and will provide all major specialist services for major trauma patients.
What is major trauma?
Trauma is a condition caused by physical injury. As with all other medical conditions, trauma has a spectrum of severity from simple injury to complex, life changing and life threatening major trauma.
Within the major trauma centre itself, an integrated service is responsible for overseeing and co-coordinating all aspects of outreach support, resuscitation, acute and on-going care, and rehabilitation for patients who have experienced major trauma.

The Emergency Department (ED) at CUH operates 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.
Paediatric Emergency Team
Working with the paediatric emergency team brings many opportunities for personal professional development including practical skills such as venepuncture and cannulation, plaster casting and advanced plastering skills. We also provide trauma training as part of the Regional Major Trauma Centre. A variety of extended training courses are also offered in this role such as EPLS, mental health training, x-ray training and PGD.
As well as being the primary trauma centre for the region a number of other specialties are also based within the hospital and work closely with the emergency department including; Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial, Plastics, Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedics and ENT.
